Winter and year-round activities

In general, there is no problem driving or flying to Hornafjörður in wintertime, with good access to the Southeast from Reykjavík all year around.

Many activity companies in the area offer a variety of activities in winter, such as boat and ATV tours, super jeeps and snowmobile tours on Vatnajökull, transportation and guided tours,  cross-country skiing, ice climbing and glacier walking with crampons on your feet.  Also, early spring is popular for hikers to conquer the highest summit in Iceland, Hvannadalshnúk.

Summer activity    

There are some activities only available in summertime, like boat trips on the mysterious Glacier lagoon.  While boating in the lagoon is only available in summer (in winter the lagoon freezes over), it is still a beautiful place to visit in the wintertime.

Eagle ear is a tour company offering sightseeing flights over the Vatnajökull area-seeing the largest glacier in the world from an airplane is indescribably beautiful.                                                                                             

A trip to the cape of Ingólfshöfði is also quite unique.  Arriving by a ride in a hay wagon, you can take a walk around the cape, see Puffins and the Great skua or take a kayak tour.
