Heinaberg
The basalt columns of Heinaberg
Between the farms Skálafell and Hólmur lies the Heinaberg area of the National Park, notable for its interesting sets of basalt columns and access to the Heinabergsjökull glacier-tongue. The 4 mile (7 km) Heinaberg valley stretches north as far as the scenic Vatnsdalur valley. This was once dammed naturally by ice, and so was full of water. Nowadays the water is gone and there is a magnificent view down on to the valley floor, which is still strewn with massive icebergs.
