In the realm of Vatnajökull, Europe´s largest glacier
The breathtaking nature in the Vatnajokull consists of powerful contrasts, with spectacular black beaches and dominating white glacier. Serenity and the forces of nature combine to make the region an unforgettable experience for visitors.
Two of the most popular tourist destinations in Iceland, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Skaftafel nature reservel, are in the Vatnajokull Region. The region overlaps the South territory of Vatnajokull National Park, the largest national park in Western Europe.
Vatnajokull glacier is the largest icecap in the world outside the arctics and it´s highest peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur, is the highest peak in Iceland.
There is rich wildlife in the Vatnajokull Regions with roaming herds of reindeer and flocks of birds that migrate from continental Europe. Curious seals are a common sight at Jökulsárlón and can sometimes be seen by the shore.
