Hiking

There are endless opportunities for trekking in the Vatnajökull region, with trails suitable for all levels of experience.

Some of these trails are clearly marked and have useful information signs. Other trails are not marked, offering a true wilderness experience for more adventurous hikers.

We recommend walking trails in Skaftafell National park, starting from the information centre. Going eastwards, great trails can be found near the farm, Hali; in the hills below Skálafellsjökull glacier; the Hjallanes ring; up to Fláajökull glacier; and in the Haukafell forest area.

Bergárfoss waterfall, in Nes, is a hidden secret, for you can actually walk behind the wall of water – a truly magical experience. Alternatively, try the coastal hike to Horn, in the shadow of the imposing Vestrahorn Mountain.

Good walking trails can also be found in Höfn. For a more difficult option take a walk up to Hoffellsfjöll.  Want even more strenuous multi-day trekking, then Lónsöræfi offers many routes. Several comfortable mountain huts can be reached from Stafafell.

Maps for these trails and many others are available in the information center in Höfn and Skaftafell and in most hotels and guesthouses in the area

Maps of different areas can be accessed by clicking on the title (pdf): Nes og Höfn, Mýrar (10 Mb), Suðursveit, Lónsöræfi.
