Camping in Iceland is simply world-class and is one of the most popular activities for Icelanders and visitors alike. And, the Vatnajökull region boasts numerous camp sites set among some of the most beautiful nature in the country.
Choices range from easily accessible camp sites near the main roads to remote locations requiring a little more effort to reach. Amenities range from simple spots for a tent to sites with playgrounds, RV or caravan services, internet access and just about everything in between. Most campgrounds have good sanitary services.
The campsite in Skaftafell is open from May 1 - September 30. The campsite is large with places for approximately 750 tents. No booking or reservation is necessary for the campsite although it is recommended for groups of 40 people or more. The campsite is equipped with facilities such as toilets, showers, laundry, barbeques, internet and electricity for campers. No proper kitchen facilities are at the campsite.
The National Park offers no equipment rental. Check-in for the campsite is at Skaftafell Visitor Center. Opening hours can be found here
We offer two types of camping at Svinafell.
We have 8 camping areas at the back of the swimming pool that accommodate 6-8 tents in each flat area, well suited for small groups and families. There are toilets and basins with running water short distance away (100m). Alternatively there is a larger area on the other side of the Campers Service Building, well suited for bigger groups of travellers.
All Guests have access to the Campers Service Building facilities next to
the cabins. Where there are minimal cooking facilities, showers and toilets, a dining room with enough tables and chairs to seat 80-90 people. In Svínafell we also offer Laundry facilities sleepingbag accommodation in cottages and double rooms.
Hrollaugsstaðir in Suðursveit
Lambhús – camping site
The camping site at Lambhús is 30 km west of Höfn. Guests enjoy the beautiful view to the Vatnajökull glacier and peaceful surroundings with rich birdlife.Sanitary facilities: 2 toilets, sink for washing up, shower and barbeque. Lambhús offers also a sleepingbag accommodation in cottages for 4 or 6 persons.
Haukafell in Mýrar offers a small campground with sanitary facilities. A beautiful walking land with two marked walking trails. Diverse vegetation and birdlife. Only 5 km. from highway nr. 1. Further information: email@example.com
Campsite SKG Höfn
SKG service center in Höfn offers a spacious campground with good sanitary facilities. Service for caravans, internet access and a playground for the children. Scheduled bus to Reykjavík and Egilsstaðir. Trips to Vatnajökull glacier, Jökulsárlón (glacier lagoon) and Lónsöræfi available. Open from mai 25th to september 15th.

Múlaskáli - Mountain cabin in Lónsöræfi
The Southeast Iceland touring association owns a mountain cottage in Kollumúli in Lónsöræfi (GPS location: 64°33.200 - 15°09.077) with sleepingbag accomodation for 30 people. Self catering kitchen and a toilet. The cottage is in a spectacular landscape from where are numerous walking and hiking trails. In the summertime there are daily bus trips from Höfn to Illikambur, which is in a 40 min. walking distance from the cottage.

Vagnsstaðir in Suðursveit
Vagnsstaðir is in the Suðursveit area, about 50 km west of Höfn and 28 km east of Jökulsárlón. The house is in an attractive area surrounded by a beautiful ring of mountains and Vatnajökull glacier. Vagnsstaðir hostel offers six rooms with the total of 28 beds. Sleepingbag accomodation is available as well as linen rental. Well equipped kitchen and a meeting room for guests. We also offer 4-6 bedded cottages with WC. Campground with good sanitary facilities.
Attractive hiking paths invite one into the surrounding area, using a hiking map, you get at the Hostel. The shore, only 1500 m away, displays extensive birdlife as well as seals on the beach.
From the Hostel there are jeep/snowmobile tours to Vatnajökull (Europe's biggest glacier). You can choose among tours from 3-4 hours. It is also possible to combine a jeep/snowmobile tour and hiking.
